See how many links top websites have for keywords you are thinking about. This free link count tool is a very quick way to see. The count in Yahoo is typically the total amount of links the site has pointing to it whereas the count for Google is typically much lower as they only count quality links from important sites. Just type in the home page URL (like www.ebizboosters.com) of the 1st, 5th, and 10th site in the search results.

You can do simple keyword analysis with some of the free tools from Overture but how much is your time worth? To get a quick feel for frequency of searches for certain keywords and how much competition there might be, I like the Keyword Analyzer Tool. It shows frequency of searches, competition, the ratio of competition to searches, and also it will tell you how many Google, Overture, and Miva PPC campaigns there are. This is plenty of information to sort through keyword choices and whether you will need a major SEO package to show up high in the results or if there are some other alternatives that might be more economical.
